A Buttressed Brick Warehouse
The Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Materials Warehouse (Old Sake Tools Gallery) (小林酒造旧資材庫(昔の酒道具展示館)) is a brick former materials warehouse of 1920 in Nishiki, Kuriyama Town, Yubari District, Hokkaido, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 18, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is also known as the Old Sake Tools Gallery.
The Agency records a two-storey brick building with a tiled roof and a building area of 114 square metres; registration number 01-0080.
The Warehouse in the Southeast Corner
The Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Materials Warehouse stands in the southeast corner of the site. It is a two-storey brick building, 13 metres by 8.5 metres, with a gabled pantile roof and an entrance on the northeast (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
On the ground floor, two round columns stand along the line of the ridge, with a stair at the east end; the upper floor is a single room (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The second name in its registered title, Old Sake Tools Gallery, refers to its use for displaying brewing equipment.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Materials Warehouse for its contribution to the historic landscape. On the ground floor, buttresses brace the walls, two on the gable side and three on the long side.
Built in 1920, the same year as the former beer and canning warehouse, it records the stores for materials other than sake that lined the south edge of the site.
What to Look For
Look for the buttresses standing out from the ground-floor walls, two on the gable side and three on the long side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). They give a small brick warehouse a muscular look.
Its pantile roof also differs from the sheet-iron roofs of most of the stores. The Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Materials Warehouse sits in the southeast corner, near the memorial hall in the east corner.
Visiting
The exterior of the Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Materials Warehouse can be seen from the grounds. No official information was found on when or whether the gallery inside is open, so ask at the Kitanonishiki Memorial Hall.
