A Timber Warehouse on the South Edge
The Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Beer and Canning Materials Warehouse stands on the south edge of the site, a little to the east. It is a single-storey timber building, 10 by 5 ken, under a gabled sheet-iron roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Inside it is divided into east and west rooms with earth and concrete floors, and it served as a warehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its name records its use for storing beer and supplies for canning.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Beer and Canning Materials Warehouse for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting horizontal board siding over a brick base and gables that show their beams and struts.
Built in 1920, it keeps a timber warehouse on a site dominated by stone and brick. The same treatment appears on the later former rice mill.
What to Look For
Look at the gable ends, where the beams and struts form a timber grid (Agency for Cultural Affairs). That framing, the brick base and the board siding together give the Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Beer and Canning Materials Warehouse its character.
Compare the gables with those of the former rice mill in the southwest corner to see the same design repeated more than 30 years later.
Visiting
The exterior of the Kobayashi Sake Brewery Former Beer and Canning Materials Warehouse can be seen from the grounds. No official information was found on whether the Taisho and Showa Life Museum inside is open, so ask at the Kitanonishiki Memorial Hall.
