A Twin of the No. 2 Storehouse, with a Difference

The Kobayashi Sake Brewery No. 3 Storehouse (小林酒造三番蔵) is a two-storey brick sake storehouse of 1921 in Nishiki, Kuriyama Town, Yubari District, Hokkaido, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 18, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey brick building with a sheet-iron roof and a building area of 312 square metres; registration number 01-0083.

Built Alongside the No. 2 Storehouse

The Kobayashi Sake Brewery No. 3 Storehouse stands immediately west of the No. 2 Storehouse, its ridge running north to south. It is a two-storey brick building, 21 ken by 4 and a half ken, under a gabled sheet-iron roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The roof rests on king-post trusses. In size and form it is close to the No. 2 Storehouse, but its upper floor is set higher (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the Kobayashi Sake Brewery No. 3 Storehouse for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that its gable ends have windows on the ground floor as well, which sets its design apart.

It dates from 1921, the same year as the No. 2 Storehouse, and the two stand wall to wall in the north row.

What to Look For

Compare the gable ends with those of the No. 2 Storehouse. The No. 2 opens windows only on its upper floor, while the Kobayashi Sake Brewery No. 3 Storehouse has them on the ground floor of the gables too (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Because the upper floor is higher, the gap between the two levels of windows looks wider than next door. Spotting the differences between two stores built in the same year is the pleasure here.

Visiting

The storehouses are not open year round. The brewery shows their interiors to groups of 10 or more by reservation, and opens them to everyone at its sake festival on the second Saturday and Sunday of April. The Kobayashi Sake Brewery No. 3 Storehouse is next to the No. 2 in the north row, so their gables can be seen side by side.
