Shogyoji Temple (Akkeshi)
Shogyoji (正行寺) is a Shin Buddhist temple in Akkeshi, Hokkaido, whose main hall, built in 1799, is an Important Cultural Property and whose bell tower of 1908 is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The temple was founded in 1879 through missionary work that followed the settlement of eastern Hokkaido (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Two Structures
The main hall was built in 1799 at Itoigawa in Niigata Prefecture and moved here in 1910 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was altered for the cold, for example by bringing the verandas inside, and keeps its original carvings and rich polychrome. It was designated an Important Cultural Property on January 21, 1992.
The bell tower, northwest of the north-facing main hall, is an open tower one bay square under a hip-and-gable copper roof, part of the precinct laid out in the Meiji era (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was registered on August 7, 2009. Each structure is described on its own page.
