An Octagonal Hall under Three Roofs

The rear hall of the Shotokuden at Ikarugadera has the look of an octagonal hall under three tiers of roofs, with hip-and-gable wings projecting north and south where it meets the middle hall (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Each tier is treated differently: the top has three-stepped brackets with fan rafters, the middle eaves simple three-block brackets with spaced rafters, and the lowest one-stepped brackets with close rafters. Inside, a cusped gable faces the middle hall and a shrine cabinet stands at the centre (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was designed by Ito Heizaemon.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design, a modern Buddhist hall designed by Ito Heizaemon.

What to Look For

Compare the brackets and rafters of the three roofs, and look for the cusped gable and shrine cabinet inside (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
