The Link Between Two Halls of the Shotokuden
The Ikarugadera Temple Shotokuden Middle Hall (斑鳩寺聖徳殿中殿) is a modern Buddhist hall of 1916 in Ikaruga, Taishi Town, Ibo District, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 31, 2007 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof, covering 73 square metres; registration number 28-0281.
The Middle Hall Linking Front and Rear
The Shotokuden stands facing east toward the south of the Ikarugadera precinct. Its middle hall links the front and rear halls under a two-sided roof of hongawara tiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The core, 4 bays deep, is an inner sanctuary under a doubly raised coffered ceiling, and the side aisles serve as corridors. The pillars at each end are shared with the front and rear halls, so the space inside is in effect 5 bays long (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was designed by Ito Heizaemon.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it as a model of design, a modern Buddhist hall designed by Ito Heizaemon.
What to Look For
Look for the doubly raised coffered ceiling and the way the pillars are shared with the front and rear halls (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
