About the Seishikan Attendants' Waiting Shelter
The Seishikan (Former Tomita Family Residence) Attendants' Waiting Shelter (静思館(旧冨田家住宅)供待ち, Seishikan Tomomachi) is a small single-story shelter built in 1934 in Ueno, Inagawa Town, Hyogo Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004. Servants who came with guests to Tomita Kumasaku's house waited here until their masters were ready to leave.
It stands west of the Front Gate, just inside a doorway in the west side wall. It measures 1.5 by 0.5 ken (a ken is about 1.8 m), with a building area of 4.2 m², under a sheet-metal roof.
Why the Seishikan Attendants' Waiting Shelter was registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Seishikan Attendants' Waiting Shelter as a model of architectural form. A shelter of about 4 m² thus shares the same criterion as the Main House and the Tea Room.
The reason is the mix of materials. The lower walls, up to waist height, are reinforced concrete, and the posts rise from them. The beam keeps the natural curve of the timber, and over it sits an asymmetric gable roof with one long slope, covered in corrugated metal. Concrete and corrugated sheet were modern materials, yet with the curved beam, clay walls and a bamboo ceiling the shelter reads as a rustic tea-garden waiting bench.
What to look for at the Seishikan Attendants' Waiting Shelter
The east side is fully open between the posts, and a bench runs along the back wall on the west. Attendants sat here keeping an eye on the gate.
Look up: the ceiling is boat-shaped, lined with split bamboo and rising to a ridge in the middle. The small wall panels above the openings are clay. Note the contrast between the pale concrete base and the curved beam and bamboo.
