About the Seishikan Front Gate

The Seishikan (Former Tomita Family Residence) Front Gate (静思館(旧冨田家住宅)表門, Seishikan Omotemon) is a Nagayamon, a gate with rooms built into it, completed in 1934 in Ueno, Inagawa Town, Hyogo Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.

It closes the south side of the estate. The gatehouse is a single-story timber building eight bays long, with a building area of 59 m² and a hipped-and-gabled (irimoya) roof of pantiles. Side walls totaling 8.3 m extend to either side, and the west wall has its own small doorway.

Why the Seishikan Front Gate was registered

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Seishikan Front Gate for its contribution to the historic landscape. It is the first building you face after climbing the access path, and it sets the formal face of the whole estate.

Gatehouses of this kind belonged to samurai residences and village headmen's houses in the Edo period. Here the main gate has an eight-mat room and a two-mat anteroom on its west side and a farm-tool store on its east. Tomita wanted his house to look like a great Edo-period farmstead, and the gate makes that intention plain.

What to look for at the Seishikan Front Gate

Look at the colors. The timber is painted with Bengara, a red-brown iron-oxide pigment, the walls are finished in yellow Ōtsu plaster, and the lower walls are clad in boards held by thin vertical battens. The same red-and-yellow pairing reappears on the Brushwood Room, Tool Room, Charcoal Room and Service Gate, and ties the estate together.

The main gate has double plank doors with a wicket door on the west, and a waist-high wooden fence stands in front of it. The town leaflet points out that the drip line under the eaves is laid with Kibune stone from Kyoto, a prized garden stone. Watch your step and look down as you pass.

Visiting the Seishikan Front Gate

During opening hours you walk through the Seishikan Front Gate to enter the estate. The town does not say whether the gate room and tool store can be seen inside.

The best view of the whole gatehouse is from the access path just outside, where the roof and both side walls fit in one frame. The car park is beside the gate. Opening days and access are on the Seishikan page.
