About the Seishikan Clothing Storehouse

The Seishikan (Former Tomita Family Residence) Clothing Storehouse (静思館(旧冨田家住宅)衣装蔵, Seishikan Ishōgura) is a two-story plastered storehouse built in 1934 in Ueno, Inagawa Town, Hyogo Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.

It stands on the north side of Tomita Kumasaku's estate, east of the Middle Storehouse. It is square in plan, 2 ken on each side (a ken is about 1.8 m), with a building area of 16 m², the smallest of the four storehouses at Seishikan. The roof is gabled and laid with pantiles.

Why the Seishikan Clothing Storehouse was registered

The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Seishikan Clothing Storehouse for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that it was designed to match the Middle Storehouse next door and gives the row a unified look.

It closes the east end of the row that begins with the Northwest Storehouse. Three stores of different sizes share the same walls and canopies, so the back of the estate reads as one continuous scene. The name suggests it held clothing and furnishings, but no record of its actual use has been found.

What to look for at the Seishikan Clothing Storehouse

The Seishikan Clothing Storehouse stands on a cut-stone plinth with vents, its door centered in the south wall under a tiled canopy that runs the full length. The walls are white Shikkui plaster above vertical boards. All of this repeats the Middle Storehouse exactly; because the plan is square, the building looks taller from the gable end.

Just east of it, the earthen wall on the north side has a back door: red Bengara timber framing and a sliding plank door with a slatted window. It is described on the Earthen Wall page.
