Behind the main house
The Tajika Family Residence Clothing Storehouse (田近家住宅衣装蔵, Tajika-ke Jūtaku Ishōgura) in Nishikoya, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the storehouse where the Tajika household kept its clothing, built in the mid-Meiji era and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 28, 2009 (number 28-0387).
The Tajika Family Residence Clothing Storehouse sits off the northeast corner of the main house, joined to it by a covered kuramae passage. It is the store closest to the family's daily life, reachable from the house without stepping out into the weather.
White plaster and charred cedar
It is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 6 metres by 4.4 metres, with a building area of 26 m², under a gabled roof of traditional round-and-flat tiles whose ridge runs north to south.
The outer walls are white plaster, partly sheathed in charred cedar boards. The door is on the west side, and there are windows on the upper floor.
Inside, the walls are lined with boards. Short posts stand on the beams to carry the ridge, and the underside of the roof is finished with dressed boards.
The private side of the compound
Of the five registered buildings, the gatehouse and the three storehouses on the west side face the street and form the public front. The Tajika Family Residence Clothing Storehouse belongs to the inner, domestic side, tucked against the house.
It dates from the mid-Meiji era, like the rice storehouse, and represents the stage when the family added storehouses to the late Edo tool and oil storehouse already standing on the site.
Visiting
The Tajika Family Residence Clothing Storehouse stands deep inside the grounds, northeast of the main house, and is hard to see from the road. The interior is not open.
The background of the estate, what can be seen from the street and directions are on the Tajika Family Residence page.
