Two stores at the northwest corner

The Tajika Family Residence Tool Storehouse and Oil Storehouse (田近家住宅道具蔵及び油蔵, Tajika-ke Jūtaku Dōgugura oyobi Aburagura) in Nishikoya, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a pair of joined earthen-walled storehouses on the west side of the Tajika compound, built in the late Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 28, 2009 (number 28-0388). It is the oldest of the five registered buildings.

The Tajika Family Residence Tool Storehouse and Oil Storehouse starts at the northern end of the west side, with the tool storehouse first and the oil storehouse to its south. The rice storehouse continues the line beyond, so three storehouses stand in a row facing the road and the waterway on the west.

One roof stepped down

Both parts have gabled roofs of traditional round-and-flat tiles with north-south ridges, the oil storehouse's ridge set lower. The tool storehouse is a 2-storey store of 6.9 metres by 3.9 metres; the oil storehouse is a single-storey store of 3.9 metres by 3.9 metres, with its southern half-bay partitioned off inside. Together they cover 55 m².

On a base of piled stone, tall vertical boarding covers the lower walls and white plaster the upper part. The two finishes read as bands, and where the roof drops from two storeys to one, the bands shift height as well.

Where the row begins

Describing the neighbouring rice storehouse, the Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it continues the line of the Tajika Family Residence Tool Storehouse and Oil Storehouse, and that by varying ridge heights, board heights and window positions the row gives the street a solid but varied face. This building, at the north end, is where that row begins.

The photograph Amagasaki City uses to introduce the whole Tajika Family Residence shows this storehouse from the northwest.

Neither the Agency's record nor the city's description says what kind of oil the oil storehouse held.

Visiting

The exterior can be seen from the road on the west side. Viewed from the northwest, as in the city's photograph, the step down from the 2-storey tool storehouse to the single-storey oil storehouse is easy to follow. The interior is not open.
