South of the oil storehouse
The Tajika Family Residence Rice Storehouse (田近家住宅米蔵, Tajika-ke Jūtaku Komegura) in Nishikoya, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the storehouse in which the Tajika household kept its rice, built in the mid-Meiji era and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 28, 2009 (number 28-0389).
The Tajika Family Residence Rice Storehouse stands on the west side of the compound, just south of the oil storehouse. Eaves to eaves with the tool and oil storehouse, it forms the southern part of the row of stores facing the road and waterway on the west.
A floating roof
It is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 9.6 metres by 3.9 metres, with a building area of 34 m². The gabled roof of round-and-flat tiles is an okiyane, a separate roof set on top of the clay structure rather than built into it.
Tall vertical boarding rises from a base of cut stone, with white plaster above. The tool and oil storehouse next door uses the same boards and plaster, but the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes its base as piled stone and this one as cut stone.
Variation along the row
The Agency singles out the Tajika Family Residence Rice Storehouse for the way it continues the line of the neighbouring stores while changing the height of the ridge, the height of the boarding and the position of the windows, giving the street a solid but varied frontage. With materials held constant and proportions shifted, a long run of storehouse walls avoids monotony.
Amagasaki City makes the same point about the storehouses along the western waterway, calling the row, with each building slightly different yet the whole well composed, one of the most attractive parts of the Tajika Family Residence.
Visiting
The exterior can be seen from the road on the west side. The differences in ridge height and window position are easiest to read from a little distance, comparing it with the tool and oil storehouse to the north. The interior is not open.
The background of the estate, what can be seen from the street and directions are on the Tajika Family Residence page.
