About the Uehara Family Residence Annex

The Uehara Family Residence Annex (上原家住宅離れ, Uehara-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a one-room detached wing of the early Meiji era in the south-west corner of a former headman's estate in Nagasu Hondōri, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.

The Uehara Family Residence Annex is a single-storey timber building 4.4 metres by 4.7 metres under a gabled roof of round and flat tiles. The national database gives 20 m²; Amagasaki City lists 19.53 m². Its north side abuts the Gate.

The agency dates it to the early Meiji era, between 1868 and 1882, the same period as the Gate, and the two may well have been planned together.

Six Mats and a Stair to the Gatehouse

Inside, the Uehara Family Residence Annex is a single six-mat room with a Tokonoma alcove and shelves. It is one of the smallest buildings on the estate, yet it is fitted out as a proper reception room.

On the north side a stair climbs to the upper floor of the neighbouring Gate. From the street the annex and the gate look like two buildings; inside they connect, gathering small rooms along the front of the estate.

Lattice Window and Plastered Eaves

The Uehara Family Residence Annex was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. Its walls are vertical boarding (Tateita-bari) with a projecting lattice window, and its eaves are plastered over.

The agency sees in these details a street front of some standing. Next to the heavy walls of the Rice Storehouse and the Gate, the boarded wall and fine lattice of the Uehara Family Residence Annex add the lighter, domestic note.

Seeing the Uehara Family Residence Annex

The Uehara Family Residence is a private home, and neither the grounds nor the room inside the Uehara Family Residence Annex are open.

The annex closes the southern end of the street front on the west road, so its lattice window and plastered eaves are the parts to look for from outside. The view has not been checked on site. Please photograph only from the public road. Directions are on the Uehara Family Residence page.
