About the Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse

The Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse (上原家住宅米蔵, Uehara-ke Jūtaku Komegura) is a two-storey clay-walled storehouse of the later Edo period on the west side of a former headman's estate in Nagasu Hondōri, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.

The Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse stands midway along the west side of the plot, joined on its south side to the Gate. It is small, 4.8 metres long and 2.8 metres deep, with a gabled roof of interlocking round and flat tiles and a pent roof on the east side. The national database gives 20 m²; Amagasaki City lists 20.48 m².

The agency dates it to the later Edo period, giving a range of 1751 to 1830. That makes it the oldest of the six Uehara buildings.

Plaster on Some Faces, Boards on Others

The Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse is finished in lime plaster, except on the north and west faces, which are clad in vertical boards (Tateita-bari). The west face is the one turned to the road; the north face looks toward the main house.

A single small window pierces the west wall at upper-floor level. On a thick clay wall, that one opening is the only break in the street face.

The pent roof on the east covers the side facing into the estate, which is where goods were most likely carried in and out, though the agency does not say where the door is.

One Third of the Street Front

The Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. In the agency's words, together with the Annex and the Gate it makes up the formal street front of the headman's house.

Along the west road the three buildings stand side by side, from north to south the Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse, the Gate and the Annex, each with its ridge at a different height. The Edo storehouse came first; the early Meiji Gate and Annex completed the line.

Seeing the Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse

The Uehara Family Residence is a private home, and visitors cannot enter the grounds or the Uehara Family Residence Rice Storehouse.

Because the storehouse faces the west road, it is one of the buildings most likely to be visible from outside: look for the boarded west face and its small upper window. Visibility has not been checked on site. Please photograph only from the public road. Directions are on the Uehara Family Residence page.
