About the Uehara Family Residence Barn
The Uehara Family Residence Barn (上原家住宅納屋, Uehara-ke Jūtaku Naya) is a two-storey barn built in the early Meiji era against the east end of the main house of a former headman's estate in Nagasu Hondōri, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.
The Uehara Family Residence Barn is a timber building 7.8 metres long and 6.9 metres deep under a gabled, pantiled roof. The national database gives its area as 61 m²; Amagasaki City lists 60.67 m².
The agency records two dates: built in the early Meiji era, between 1868 and 1882, and extended in the late Meiji era, between 1898 and 1912.
Work Below, Reception Rooms Above
The ground floor of the Uehara Family Residence Barn is an earth-floored Doma, the working barn of the house. Upstairs are two tatami reception rooms.
There is no outside stair to them. They are reached from the main house, so the upper floor works as an extension of the family's living space laid over a farm workroom.
The agency's description leaves open if the upstairs rooms were there from the start or came with the late Meiji extension, and this page does not guess.
A Back Wall Dressed to Match
The Uehara Family Residence Barn was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the reason lies on the side facing out of the estate.
Along the alley behind it, the barn carries a double roof, and its walls are clad to waist height in vertical boarding (Tateita-bari). The agency reads this as a deliberate match with the main house. A service building, in other words, was finished so that from the alley it reads as part of one continuous house front.
Seeing the Uehara Family Residence Barn
The Uehara Family Residence Barn belongs to a private home, and neither the grounds nor the interior are open.
The alley-side back wall described by the agency is the part designed to be seen, but how much of it is visible from the alley has not been checked on site. Please photograph only from the public road. Directions are on the Uehara Family Residence page.
