A Zen Hall of 1751 North of Himeji Castle

The Unshoji Temple Main Hall (雲松寺本堂) is an Ōbaku Zen main hall of 1751 in the precinct of Unshoji in Kobasamacho, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is pronounced Unshō-ji Hondō.

The Agency records a single-storey timber hall with a tiled roof and a building area of 242 square metres, built in 1751 and repaired in the late Edo period and again in 1925; registration number 28-0821.

A Hall Wrapped in a Pent Roof

The Unshoji Temple Main Hall stands at the heart of the precinct on a raised stone podium. Its hip-and-gable roof is laid in round and flat tiles, and a pent roof runs round all four sides beneath it, so that from outside the hall seems to wear two roofs, one above the other. A jewel-shaped finial crowns the ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

On the core of the building the brackets are simple three-block sets, the eaves are carried on a single layer of fan rafters radiating from the corners, and the gables are dressed with a double rainbow beam and a frog-leg strut. Fan rafters are a hallmark of Zen temple architecture.

Inside, six rooms are laid out in two rows of three, and the middle room at the back is the inner sanctuary, with a coffered ceiling and a Sumeru altar platform (Agency for Cultural Affairs). News reports at the time of registration said the principal image is kept on this altar; the temple names it as a seated Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai, the Buddha of healing.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency describes the Unshoji Temple Main Hall as one of the representative Ōbaku temple buildings of the Harima region, and registered it as a model of design. Its description points to the podium, pent roof, fan rafters and jewel finial outside, and to the six-room plan with the sanctuary at the back centre.

What to Look For

Stand back a little to take in the double silhouette of pent roof and main roof, and the jewel finial on the ridge. Closer in, look up under the eaves to see the rafters fanning out towards the corners, then turn to the gable ends for the paired rainbow beams and the frog-leg strut.

On Temple Day, the first Sunday of each month, early-morning zazen is held on the hall's veranda and a yoga class takes place in the spacious interior in the late afternoon, according to the temple.

Visiting

The exterior of the Unshoji Temple Main Hall can be seen from the grounds. The temple announces no regular opening of the interior, but anyone may join the zazen and yoga sessions held in and around the hall on Temple Day (temple website). No official guidance on photography was found.
