The Temple's Entrance and Living Quarters

The Unshoji Temple Entrance and Priests' Quarters (雲松寺玄関及び庫裏) is a temple entrance and priests' quarters of about 1930 in the precinct of Unshoji in Kobasamacho, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is pronounced Unshō-ji Genkan oyobi Kuri.

The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 285 square metres; registration number 28-0822.

An L-Shaped Entrance and Residence

The Unshoji Temple Entrance and Priests' Quarters stand east of the main hall, facing south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). An entrance wing under a hip-and-gable roof runs east to west, and the kuri, the priests' living and working quarters, runs north to south from it, so that the whole building forms an L.

The entrance is fronted by a shikidai, a formal raised step for receiving guests, under a curved karahafu gable. In the kuri, the southwest corner is an earth-floored work area, and to the north six tatami rooms are set out in two rows (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The temple's own website presents the building as a guest hall looking onto an inner garden.

The rooms facing the north and west gardens are divided by sliding doors painted with wild geese, pine, bamboo and plum (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency's photographs are captioned with room names, the Bamboo Room and the Plum Room, showing that the rooms take their names from the paintings.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency calls the Unshoji Temple Entrance and Priests' Quarters an elegant kuri, its painted rooms looking onto gardens, and registered it as a model of design. It joins a formal entrance with a karahafu gable to the everyday spaces of a working temple, the earthen kitchen floor and the tatami rooms, in one building of the early Showa era.

What to Look For

From the grounds the entrance is seen head-on, its shikidai sheltered by the curved karahafu gable. Walk a few steps to one side and the two roofs, the entrance wing and the kuri behind, can be seen meeting at a right angle.

The temple lists sliding-door paintings by the Taisho-era artist Akashi Shoun among its highlights and suggests spending a winter afternoon with them. Whether the geese, pine, bamboo and plum panels are his work could not be confirmed from official sources.

Visiting

The Unshoji Temple Entrance and Priests' Quarters are part of the temple's daily life, and no opening of the tatami rooms is announced. The exterior can be seen from the grounds. To see the rooms or the painted doors, ask the temple in advance. No official guidance on photography was found.
