A Small Hall for the Mountain King
The Unshoji Temple Sannodo Hall (雲松寺山王堂) is a small hall dedicated to the deity Sanno Gongen of 1931 in the precinct of Unshoji in Kobasamacho, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 3, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is pronounced Unshō-ji Sannō-dō.
The Agency records a single-storey timber hall with a tiled roof and a building area of 39 square metres; registration number 28-0823.
A Glass-Fronted Hall in Old Forms
The Unshoji Temple Sannodo Hall stands southeast of the main hall, facing south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is small, 3 bays wide and 3 and a half bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof in round and flat tiles and a one-bay porch projecting at the front.
The posts carry plain boat-shaped bracket arms, the eaves rest on a single layer of widely spaced rafters, and the gables are dressed with a rainbow beam and a vase-shaped strut. It is a far simpler order than the bracket sets and fan rafters of the main hall. Inside, the hall is divided into inner and outer sanctums; at the back of the inner one, an altar carries a kuden, a small shrine-like cabinet for the enshrined deity (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Across the front are glazed doors, which the Agency singles out as the mark of a modern Buddhist hall.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Unshoji Temple Sannodo Hall for its contribution to the historic landscape. A small hip-and-gable hall in traditional forms, given glazed doors in the early Showa era, it adds its own note to a precinct centred on the main hall.
Sanno Gongen and Unshoji
Sanno Gongen is the deity of Hiyoshi Taisha at the foot of Mount Hiei, long worshipped in Buddhist temples as a guardian. It is this deity that the Unshoji Temple Sannodo Hall enshrines (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
A Nozato community walking guide notes that Hie Shrine, a short way from the temple, was also once known as Sanno Gongen and is said to have become Unshoji's guardian shrine after it was rebuilt in the time of Ikeda Terumasa. No official source was found linking the shrine to the Sannodo itself.
What to Look For
From the south the little hip-and-gable roof, its projecting porch and the full width of glazed doors read together as one face. Old-fashioned bracket arms and vase-shaped struts sharing a front with Showa-era glass are what make the hall worth a look. Compare its eaves with those of the main hall to see the difference in rank between the two.
Visiting
The exterior of the Unshoji Temple Sannodo Hall can be seen from the grounds. No opening of the kuden inside is announced, and no official guidance on photography was found.
