What Is the Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse?

The Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse (魚橋家住宅外蔵, Uohashi-ke Jūtaku Sotogura) is a tool storehouse at the far western end of the Uohashi Family Residence in Idei, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture; it was built in 1907 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2014.

A two-story Dozo-zukuri earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof, it measures 14.5 by 5.1 meters, with a building area of 92 square meters. Only the main house is larger, and it is the biggest of the compound's storehouses. Its address is 81-2 Idei.

Why the Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse Was Registered

The Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a store for everyday tools and implements.

It went up seven years after the main house and about nine years before the detached room and inner storehouse, so the household provided for its working equipment before it built a guest wing or a clothing store. Running north to south along the western boundary, the long storehouse marks the full depth of the townhouse plot.

What to Look for at the Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse

The Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse is long and narrow, aligned north to south under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Hongawarabuki tiles. Along its east face, the side turned toward the rest of the compound, runs a lean-to Geya roof of Sangawara-buki tiles.

The walls are plastered in Shikkui with a Hachimaki band beneath the eaves, and the lower walls are sheathed in vertical boarding, or Tateita-bari. Where the inner storehouse dresses its east face with a tiled dado, the outer storehouse keeps boarding all the way round, a practical finish suited to a tool store.

Inside, the building is divided into north and south halves, each with its own door. Rather than one long room, the 14.5-meter building gives each half its own entrance from outside, and the long lean-to on the east face shelters both doors from the rain.

Visiting the Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse

The Uohashi Family Residence Outer Storehouse stands at the very back of a private property and is not open to the public. From the Nozato road it is screened by the main house and the detached room. Its long profile and the lean-to on the east side can be seen in the photographs on the Agency for Cultural Affairs database.
