A single-bay gate on the Iizuka road
Ichizuka Masahiro Family Residence Front Gate (市塚昌宏家住宅表門) is a small gate of the Yakuimon type at Iizuka in Makabe, Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture, built in the early Meiji era after 1868 and listed on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 July 2003.
A yakuimon is carried on two stout front posts with a lighter pair behind, the ridge set forward of center so that the roof overhangs the approach. This one is a single bay with a single doorway. The registry lists its frontage as 2.5 meters in the structural entry, while the accompanying commentary gives 2.7 meters. Wing walls in Shinkabe construction, with the posts left showing, run out to either side.
Every roof surface here is gabled Kirizuma-zukuri in Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a single tier of widely spaced Taruki rafters. The gate stands on the northern boundary of the plot, facing the street known locally as the Iizuka road, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs entry credits it with composing both the front of the property and the view along that street.
Why Makabe filled up with gates
Under the Tokugawa order, gates announced rank, and merchants were not free to build whatever they liked. Once those constraints fell away in the Meiji period, Sakuragawa City records that the merchant households of Makabe put up yakuimon one after another. Ichizuka Masahiro Family Residence Front Gate belongs to that wave. It also explains something visitors often notice: this is a commercial town, yet gates and board fences are as conspicuous here as shopfronts, which is unusual among Japan's preserved merchant districts.
Its entry cites the criterion used across Makabe, a contribution to the nation's historic landscape, though the register files the gate not as a building but as a structure, the category kept for walls, fences and similar works. Makabe's tally of registered properties now runs to roughly 100. The city drove that count from 1999 onward, and selection of the 17.6 hectare core as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings followed in 2010.
There is a small trap in the vocabulary. Shinkabe, the wall technique used for the wing walls, is written with the same two characters as Makabe, the name of the town, and read differently. One names a way of finishing a wall, the other a place, and registry descriptions here use both words in a single sentence without comment.
The detail that dates it
The doors of Ichizuka Masahiro Family Residence Front Gate do not hang on metal hinges. Top and bottom they turn on warza, wooden bearings that take the pivot of the leaf, an older arrangement that survives on temple and shrine work and on gates built by carpenters who knew that tradition. Metal fittings were cheap and available by the Meiji period, so the choice was deliberate. Look at the top corner of a leaf where it meets the lintel and you can see the collar the pivot turns in.
The rafters repay attention too. A single tier, set well apart rather than crowded, leaves clear bands of shadow under the eaves. On a gate this small, that spacing is what keeps the roof from looking heavy above a 2.5 meter opening.
Then take in the whole frontage. Gate, wing walls and roof were composed together, which is what the registry means when it says the structure orders the appearance of the property. Much of the district has been under repair since 2011, when the Tohoku earthquake left over nine tenths of its traditional buildings damaged, so some tilework nearby is newer than the structure it crowns.

The gate is close enough to the old center to reach on foot, and walking is the sensible way to see it: the lanes are narrow, and the registered buildings only make sense in sequence. Come by rail to Iwase on the JR Mito Line and a taxi covers the remaining distance in about 15 minutes. The Yamazakura GO city bus stops at the Sakuragawa City Hall Makabe Branch, a short walk away, and that stop stays in service on the days when the center is closed to cars during the hina doll season, which in 2026 ran from 4 February to 3 March. Drivers coming from the Joban Expressway leave at Tsuchiura-kita and allow about 50 minutes.
