A Long Oya-Stone Warehouse

The Murai Jozo Stone Storehouse (村井醸造石蔵) is a long warehouse faced in Oya stone of the Taisho period in Makabecho Makabe, Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 4, 2000 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey stone building with a tiled roof and a building area of 145 square metres; registration number 08-0046.

Oya Stone over a Timber Frame

The Murai family have brewed in the centre of Makabe since around the mid-Edo period (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The stone storehouse, of the Taisho period, stands across the road from the side storehouse; it is a long gabled building twelve bays deep, entered from the gable end.

It is divided into three rooms inside, with lean-to canopies on the south side facing the road and on the east side with its door. A timber frame with king-post trusses is faced outside in Oya stone, and the Agency calls it a good example of a Taisho warehouse.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design.
