A Headman's Gate on the Old Makabe Road
The Yatabe Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (谷田部家住宅長屋門) is a late Edo period gatehouse at Furushiro in Makabe-cho, Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2000. It stands along the western edge of the Yatabe family grounds, facing the old road that once ran between the merchant quarter of Makabe and the site of Makabe Castle.
A Nagayamon is not a gate in the narrow sense. It is a long, low building with a passage cut through the middle, so that rooms sit on either side of the opening. The Yatabe gate follows that plan without deviation. Inward-opening doors fill the central bay. The northern wing holds an 8-mat Zashiki. The southern wing is a boarded storeroom.
The household that built it had reason to want something of this scale. The Yatabe served as hereditary village headmen at Furushiro from the early years of the Edo period, and in the early Meiji years the head of the house held the post of kocho, the district officer who replaced the headman under the new administration. Standing was communicated at the property line, before a caller ever reached the house.
Why the Gate Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the Yatabe Family Residence Nagayamon Gate as 8 Ken along the ridge and 2 ken in depth, with a building area of 74 square meters, counted as 1 building. The roof is Yosemune-zukuri, hipped on all four sides, and is now laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles; it was Kayabuki thatch originally. A Geya lean-to wraps the southern face and part of the eastern one.
Its construction is dated to the closing decades of the Edo period, between 1830 and 1867 in the Agency's reckoning. Registration came under the criterion covering works that set a standard of design, and the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education describes the gate as the representative surviving example among the many nagayamon still standing in Makabe.
That comparison carries weight in this town. Sakuragawa City reports roughly 100 buildings in the Makabe district on the national register, an unusual concentration for a settlement of its size, and gates are conspicuous among them. A registration is not a ranking. What the register records here is that the Yatabe gate keeps its original form intact enough to show what the type looked like when it was ordinary.
Looking at the Front Elevation
Small barred windows, called yoriki-mado, open in each bay across the front of the Yatabe Family Residence Nagayamon Gate. They are easy to miss because they sit high and are narrow, and because the eye goes first to the doors. Find them and the rhythm of the facade resolves: solid wall, small window, solid wall, repeated the length of the building until the central opening breaks the sequence.
The hipped roof is worth a moment on its own. Four slopes meeting at a short ridge give the gate a heavier, more settled outline than the gabled roofs common on the shop buildings a few streets west. The pantiles now covering it replaced thatch at some point after construction, and the change altered the weight and the shadow line without altering the pitch.
From the road you cannot see into the 8-mat room on the north side. Its position tells you enough. A gatehouse with a matted room in it was staffed, not merely closed at night.

Viewing means standing on the public road and looking at the exterior, which can be done at any hour. The lane in front is not wide, so stopping a vehicle to look is a poor idea.
Photography from the road is unproblematic. Aiming a lens through the gateway at the house beyond is a different matter, and courtesy argues against it. People live here.
The nearest railway station is Iwase on the JR Mito Line, about 10 kilometers from central Makabe. The Sakuragawa city bus, Yamazakura GO, links the station with the Makabe area; routes and timetables are published on the city website and change periodically, so check before travelling. Rental bicycles are available at Iwase Station, and the ride takes roughly 60 minutes. Coming from the south, Tsukubasan-guchi lies about 9.9 kilometers away and is reached from Tsukuba Station on the Tsukuba Express.
The town is busiest during the Makabe Hina Matsuri, held each year from early February until 3 March, when households along the streets set out their doll displays.
