A Ridge-Roofed Gate to the Garden
Hashimoto Sake Brewery Front Gate (橋本酒造表門, Hashimoto Shuzō Omotemon) is a gate at a sake brewer's compound in Iburihashi-machi, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, rebuilt in 1950 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 December 2005. It opens at the northern end of the east boundary and leads into the garden north of the main house.
It is a Munamon, a single-bay, single-door gate under a gabled copper-plate roof, 1.7 metres wide, flanked by Sodobei side walls. The main posts stand on foundation stones, and braces set at an angle support them from behind.
A plaque reading Kaikatei hangs in the lattice Ranma transom above the doors. The official description does not explain the name, but the gate's position suggests it was meant for guests entering the garden rather than for brewery traffic.
Why It Was Registered
The Hashimoto Sake Brewery Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. After the Fukui earthquake of 1948 it was rebuilt on the same spot in almost the same form.
That decision not to change it is what matters. The compound's street front is read as one continuous line of main house, gate and wall, and a gate in a new style would have broken it. Restored within two years of the earthquake, the gate kept the Iburihashi roadside intact.
What to Look For
Stand in front of the Hashimoto Sake Brewery Front Gate and look above the doors for the Kaikatei plaque behind the lattice.
Then step to the side to see the braces rising at an angle behind the main posts, which steady this narrow one-bay gate from behind. The copper roof also stands out in colour against the tiled roofs of the main house and wall.
Visiting
The Hashimoto Sake Brewery Front Gate is on the east edge of the lot, facing the road, so its exterior can be seen from the public street. Beyond it the grounds are private and cannot be entered without the owner's permission.
Plans to open the compound as a private art museum have been reported, but whether this gate will serve as an entrance could not be confirmed as of September 2026. Directions and general visiting conditions are on the Hashimoto Sake Brewery page.
