A Guest Wing Rebuilt After the Fukui Earthquake
Hashimoto Sake Brewery Detached Reception Room (橋本酒造離座敷, Hashimoto Shuzō Hanare-zashiki) is a guest wing built in 1950 at a sake brewer's compound in Iburihashi-machi, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 December 2005. It is joined to the northwest corner of the main house, with its ridge running north to south.
A single-storey timber building under an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof of Sangawara-buki tiles, it has a building area of 94 square metres. A formal Zashiki of 12.5 Tatami mats and a 10-mat anteroom are set in a line from south to north, with a broad veranda along the east side. In the southeast corner, closest to the main house, is a 4.5-mat Chashitsu tea room.
The Hashimoto Sake Brewery Detached Reception Room replaced its predecessor after the Fukui earthquake of 1948. Within two years the family had rebuilt the room where it received guests.
Why It Was Registered
The wing was registered as a model of form. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, although a rebuilding, its main room has a Tokonoma alcove, painted sliding doors and an oriage coved ceiling, giving it a high level of formality.
An oriage ceiling lifts the central panel above a stepped or curved border, a device reserved for the most important rooms. Giving a brewer's reception room that kind of finish in the lean years just after the war is what sets this building apart.
Its ridge carries Shakudani stone, matching the main house next door.
What to Look For
The broad east veranda faces the garden north of the main house, the garden entered through the front gate. Guests would have crossed the garden and stepped up from the veranda into the main room.
If you get the chance to go in, look up first. The raised centre of the coved ceiling is the clearest sign of the room's rank. Compare the alcove and painted doors with the plainer 10-mat anteroom to the north to see the difference between the upper and lower seats.
Visiting
The Hashimoto Sake Brewery Detached Reception Room stands inside the grounds behind the main house, and from the public road only part of its roof is visible. The property is private and cannot be entered without the owner's permission.
Plans to open the compound as a private art museum have been reported, but whether this wing will be open and whether photography is allowed could not be confirmed as of September 2026. Directions and general visiting conditions are on the Hashimoto Sake Brewery page.
