What Is the Sato Family Residence Main Gate and Stone Wall?

The Sato Family Residence Main Gate and Stone Wall (佐藤家住宅正門及び石塀, Satō-ke Jūtaku Seimon oyobi Ishibei) is a stone gate and boundary wall built in the late Taisho period on the Yokoya Sake Brewery and Sato Family Residence site in Senmaya, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003.

The gate stands at the southern corner of the estate, and from it the wall runs north along the street as far as the Small Storehouse. The gateway is 3.5 metres wide and the wall 45 metres long. Two main posts of granite carry the gate, with a third, smaller post framing a wicket door. The gate leaves themselves are later replacements.

Why It Was Registered

The registration criterion is that the structure contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving the roadside the solid frontage of a substantial estate. Its registration number is 03-0041.

For anyone walking down the street, this is the Sato Family Residence: a gate and 45 metres of stone that screen the house and storehouses behind and announce a brewer's estate in the middle of town.

What to Look For

The wall is built in layers of different stone and different finishes. The lower courses are granite dressed in edokiri style, each block trimmed with a narrow chiselled margin around its face. Above is tuff, a softer volcanic stone, dressed with a bishan, a hammer whose head is a grid of small points, leaving an even, finely pitted surface. Coping stones cap the top.

Hard granite at the foot, easily worked tuff above: the same recipe is used in the Garden Gate and Stone Wall elsewhere on the estate. Walk the wall and, at waist height, compare the crisp margins of the edokiri blocks with the pitted tuff; you can see two different kinds of mason's work side by side.

At the gate, a lesser post beside the two main posts frames the wicket, a small door that let people come and go without opening the main leaves.

Visiting

The Sato Family Residence Main Gate and Stone Wall faces the street, so it can be seen from outside the grounds at any time. On opening days of the Senmaya Sake no Kura Exchange Facility you can walk in through the gate. For the full length of the wall, stand in front of the gate and look north toward the Small Storehouse.
