Frames of Dark Fired Brick

The Sekinoichi brewery stands by the Iwai River, on part of the former quarter of the middle and lower samurai of the Ichinoseki domain (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Sato Tokuzo of Surisawa Village bought the Kumabun brewery and rebuilt it, to designs by his cousin Obara Yusuke, a pupil of Tatsuno Kingo.

The former pressing room and sales warehouse, of 1919, is a single-storey stone building running north to south along the street, south-east of the brewing storehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs). In the same design as the former rice store and mill, it frames its windows in dark fired brick for decorative effect.

The Agency values it as a glimpse of the style of its designer, Obara Yusuke.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design.
