A Hall the Size of a Small Room

Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Jizo Hall is a single-storey wooden Buddhist hall in Zentsujicho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, built in 1940 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2010.

It faces south, immediately west of the Goma Hall. The plan is nominally three bays square, but the flanking bays are narrow and the weight of the building falls on the central one. The floor area is 6.6 square metres. Set against the 554 square metres of the Mieido Hall in the same precinct, it is by some margin the smallest of the listed halls here.

The Hōgyō-zukuri pyramidal roof is sheathed in copper and carries a Noki-karahafu curved gable over the entrance. The floor is beaten earth, the ceiling is a coffered Gō-tenjō, and a stone image of Jizo, the bodhisattva who watches over travellers and children, stands at the centre.

Small but Fully Detailed

Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Jizo Hall was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country, as number 37-0344.

Nothing was skimped for the sake of size. A course of kerb stones edges the platform, square posts rise from dressed stone bases, and boat-shaped bracket arms sit on the posts. The eaves carry a single tier of widely spaced rafters. An earth floor combined with a coffered ceiling is generous treatment for a building this small. The Agency for Cultural Affairs description points to the gentle roof pitch and the calm exterior it produces.

The corridor from the Goma Hall wraps around the side and rear of this hall, so it is normally seen across a covered walkway. Since the three structures were built in the same year, the dimensions of hall and passage were evidently settled with each other in mind.

What to Look For

From the front, only the middle of the eaves lifts into the soft curve of the gable. Because the roof pitch is shallow overall, that curve stays understated and the eaves line barely changes height. The restraint suits the scale of the building.

Through the opening, the grid of the coffered ceiling and the stone figure beneath it are both visible. Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Jizo Hall is shallow from front to back, so a visitor standing outside can take in most of what there is to see.

Visiting Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Jizo Hall

The hall stands west of the Goma Hall, enclosed on two sides by the covered corridor. Walking the corridor gives the flank and rear; coming round to the south gives the whole building.

No interior visit is offered, though for a small earth-floored hall that matters little, since the view from the front reaches the stone image. Nothing is posted about photography, so a word at the reception desk inside the Mieido Hall is worth having before shooting into the interior.
