The Bridge to the Imperial Envoy Gate
Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Imperial Envoy Bridge is a stone girder bridge in Zentsujicho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, built in 1936 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2010.
It crosses the moat east of the Imperial Envoy Gate. The span measures 6.5 metres in length and 3.6 metres in width, carried on a single pier at the centre, with the deck rising in a gentle arch.
Because a moat runs along the eastern boundary of Tanjoin, no gate can be reached without crossing water. The Hatsukabashi Bridge to the north serves the Nio Gate; Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Imperial Envoy Bridge serves the gate behind it. Gate and bridge work as pairs, giving the precinct two formal approaches.
Character in the Size of the Finials
Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Imperial Envoy Bridge was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country, as number 37-0357, the last in the run given to the 19 Tanjoin structures.
A Kōran balustrade topped with Giboshi onion-shaped finials runs along both sides of the deck. Eight posts carry finials on each side, sixteen in all. The Agency for Cultural Affairs description singles out how large the finials are in relation to the slender posts, and the weight-shaped struts beneath the rail. Neither choice is structural; both point to a balustrade designed to be looked at.
The Imperial Envoy Gate is not opened for everyday use. That the bridge in front of it should be the more decorated of the two crossings suggests the design answered to the standing of the occasion rather than the volume of traffic.
What to Look For
The shape reads better from the bank than from the deck. Either side of the central pier the roadway lifts slightly, and together with its reflection it completes a shallow curve. Arched though it is, the gradient is mild enough to walk without effort.
Come close to the balustrade. The bulb of each finial is wider than the post below it, so from a distance the line of finials registers before the line of posts. The weight-shaped struts show their outline best from an oblique angle. At 6.5 metres, Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Imperial Envoy Bridge takes very little time to examine in detail.
Visiting Zentsuji Tanjoin Temple Imperial Envoy Bridge
The bridge spans the moat on the eastern edge of the precinct, facing a public road. The whole of it is visible from the pavement, with no reception desk to pass.
Since the gate beyond stays closed, crossing is not always possible, and everyday entry is through the Nio Gate to the north. The temple charges only for the underground passage and the treasure house, so no ticket applies here. Nothing is posted about photography, and there is no obstacle to shooting from the road side.
