A Twenty-Metre Reception Building

Zentsuji Tanjoin Shinden Hall is a single-storey wooden reception building in Zentsujicho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, built in 1907 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2010.

It runs east to west south of the Mieido Hall, under an Irimoya-zukuri hipped and gabled roof in Sangawara-buki pantiles. The building measures 20 metres along the ridge and 11 metres across, covering 215 square metres, and a Kirime-en veranda with a jointed balustrade wraps three sides.

Inside, four rooms face south and four face north, eight in all, with a matted corridor added along the north side. Where the northern part of the precinct is a run of worship halls, Zentsuji Tanjoin Shinden Hall exists for sitting, receiving and conversation.

The Room of Highest Rank

Zentsuji Tanjoin Shinden Hall was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country, as number 37-0347.

The westernmost of the south-facing rooms is the raised room. It holds a Tokonoma alcove and the shelving of a Tokowaki beside it, and its ceiling is a finely gridded coffered panel raised in two stages. A coved coffered ceiling already signals rank in a Japanese room; doubling the cove leaves no doubt which room stands highest. The official description notes the scale and bearing of the building.

The word shinden properly denotes an emperor's residential hall. That Tanjoin gave this name to a building of 1907 sits alongside the Imperial Envoy Gate and Imperial Envoy Bridge elsewhere in the precinct, though no primary source found for this article explains the choice directly.

What to Look For

From outside, follow the veranda and its balustrade. The boards of a kirime-en run across the line of the posts, so the horizontal carries the full 20 metres of the building, and the balustrade above reinforces it.

The roof is hipped and gabled, but the ridge is long enough that the gable triangle reads small against the whole. Seen at an angle, Zentsuji Tanjoin Shinden Hall stacks two long horizontals, roof and veranda, in deliberate contrast to the upright bulk of the Mieido Hall to the north.

Visiting Zentsuji Tanjoin Shinden Hall

The building is in use for the working and receiving life of the temple, and the interior is closed. Walking as far as the entrance halls attached at its east end brings the roof and the eastern half of the veranda into view.

The temple sells tickets only for the underground passage and the treasure house, both handled inside the Mieido Hall; this building is not part of either. Nothing is posted about photography, so keep to shots of the exterior from the forecourt and ask at that desk if in doubt.
