Intangible Folk Cultural Properties Requiring Documentation of Kagoshima

Ichiki no Tanabata Odori is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property held every August in the Osato district of Ichiki-Kushikino City, Kagoshima Prefecture. This extraordinary folk festival features giant papier-mâché animal floats, costumed processions of Ryukyu kings and feudal lords, and powerful taiko drum dances performed in a rare three-part structure. With origins tracing back over 400 years to the Shimazu clan's military triumphs and local land reclamation, 300 to 400 community members come together for this spectacular summer celebration.

Satsuma no Mizu Karakuri is Japan's only surviving tradition of water-powered puppet theater, found exclusively in southern Kagoshima Prefecture. Selected as a nationally important intangible folk cultural property in 1984, these remarkable performances use waterwheels as their sole power source to animate elaborate puppet figures at the summer festivals of Takeda Shrine and Toyotamahime Shrine, preserving centuries of Edo-period craftsmanship.
