The Gate to the Garden
The Sameshima Family Residence Courtyard Garden Gate (鮫島家住宅坪庭門, Sameshima-ke Jūtaku Tsuboniwa-mon) is a late Meiji-period timber gate within the Sameshima estate in Kaseda Fumoto, Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It marks the boundary between the path from the front gate to the main house and the garden in front of the reception rooms.
It is a bracket-armed gate 1.3 metres wide under a small gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. Square posts stand on cut-stone footings, tied by a lintel that carries the ridge beam, with props behind for stability. Trees line it on either side. It was renovated in 1998.
Gulls over Running Water
The detail that makes the Sameshima Family Residence Courtyard Garden Gate memorable is the carved board set between lintel and ridge beam, a Ranma panel showing gulls flying over flowing water. It sits exactly where someone walking in from the front gate would see it just before stepping into the garden, and it works as a signal that the formal approach is over.
The eaves use a single tier of widely spaced Taruki rafters, thin and few. Everything about the gate is light, in deliberate contrast to the heavy gatehouse and storehouse on the street. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a nimble gate that adorns the garden.
If the street gatehouse announces the household to the town, this gate belongs to the garden. The difference between them is a neat illustration of how a late Meiji estate changed character between its public front and its private interior. It was registered under the criterion of contribution to the historic landscape.
What to Notice
Besides the carving, notice how little structure there is: two posts, a lintel, a ridge beam. Because the props are only at the back, the gate looks especially slender from the front. According to the tourism association's walking map, the garden beyond was once fed by a spring and is now a dry garden.
Visiting
The Sameshima Family Residence Courtyard Garden Gate stands inside a private estate, in front of the main house, and is not visible from the street. It is not open to the public (checked September 2026). Directions to the district are given on the Sameshima Family Residence page.
