What Kinparo Ryokan Is
Kinparo Ryokan (旅館金波楼, Ryokan Kinpa-rō) is a three-storey timber inn built in 1909 at Hinagu Onsen in Hinagu Kaminishi-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and three of its structures, the Main Building, the Large Hall Wing and the Main Gate and Wall, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 28 April 2009.
The three entries carry consecutive registration numbers, 43-0105 to 43-0107, and were listed together on the same day. Yatsushiro City describes Kinparo as the largest of the wooden three-storey inns still standing in the spa town. It is still a working ryokan, so guests sleep and bathe inside the registered buildings.
Two different criteria apply. The Main Building and the Main Gate and Wall were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape. The Large Hall Wing, added in 1938, was registered as a model of design.
An Inn That Grew with the Spa Town
The Kinparo Ryokan Main Building went up in 1909, and the inn opened for business in 1910. According to Yatsushiro City, a newspaper of the day hailed it as the finest hot-spring inn in Kyushu.
In 1914 the owners bought the inn next door and joined it to the northeast corner of the Main Building as an L-shaped wing, which is why the national record dates the Main Building to 1909 with an extension of 1914. The Large Hall Wing, with its 80-mat banquet room, followed in 1938 at the east rear of the site. The gate and wall are attributed to the early Showa period, the years after 1926.
The inn explains its name, "golden waves", as a memory of the view from its third floor: the setting sun turning the Yatsushiro Sea gold, before land reclamation pushed the shoreline away. The sea is no longer visible from the street, but the name keeps the old outlook.
How the Site Is Laid Out
Kinparo Ryokan faces a street on its north side. A roofed gate of the Udekimon type opens onto the street, and from its eastern wing wall a boundary wall runs along the frontage. Behind the gate and wall rises the three-storey Main Building.
The Main Building is U-shaped in plan, open towards the street, with the L-shaped wing of 1914 attached at its northeast corner. The Large Hall Wing joins the Main Building at the east rear and runs north to south. At its northwest corner, close to where it meets the Main Building, stands a brick chimney 15 meters tall.
From outside, the best approach is to stand in the street and take in the gate, the wall and the front of the Main Building together. The Large Hall Wing sits behind the Main Building and is hard to see from the road; its 80-mat room can only be seen from inside.
Visiting: Access and Opening
Because Kinparo Ryokan is a working inn, the way into the buildings is to stay overnight or to use the day-bathing service. The Hinagu Onsen ryokan association lists day bathing from 3:30 p.m. (from noon on weekends and holidays) to 9:00 p.m. for 500 yen. Times and prices can change, so check with the inn before you go.
The inn also offers guided looks around the building and tells overnight guests they can ask for one. All rooms are non-smoking to protect the registered structures. The gate, the wall and the front of the Main Building can be viewed freely from the street.
The nearest station to Kinparo Ryokan is Hinagu Onsen on the Hisatsu Orange Railway, about a 15-minute walk away according to Kumamoto Prefecture's tourism site. The inn has its own car park. Enquiries: Kinparo, telephone 0965-38-0611.
