The Street Front of a 1909 Spa Inn
The Kinparo Ryokan Main Building (旅館金波楼本館, Ryokan Kinparō Honkan) is a three-storey timber inn building of 1909, extended in 1914, at Hinagu Onsen in Hinagu Kaminishi-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2009 under registration number 43-0105.
The national record gives it a building area of 568 square meters under a tiled roof. Of the three registered structures at Kinparo, this is the one that holds the guest rooms and presents the inn's face to the street.
Why It Was Registered: A Glazed, Open Facade
The Kinparo Ryokan Main Building was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the reason is its north front. On the street side, each of the three floors has its own projecting eave, a Hisashi, above a wide opening filled with glazed sliding doors.
Instead of a closed wall, the facade reads as stacked horizontal bands of eave and glass, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes as an open, airy exterior. Hinagu once had a whole street of wooden three-storey inns; this is the largest of those still standing.
What to Look For: A U-Shaped Plan and a Tangle of Roofs
In plan, the Kinparo Ryokan Main Building is U-shaped, open towards the street to the north. An L-shaped wing is attached at the northeast corner. Yatsushiro City records that this wing was a neighbouring inn, bought in 1914 and joined on, which explains the two dates in the official entry.
Joining buildings of two periods left a roof that refuses to be simple. Hipped Yosemune-zukuri and gabled Kirizuma-zukuri sections are combined in a complicated way, and from the street the ridges can be seen changing direction. Try reading the folds of the roof to find where the two buildings meet.
Inside, Kinparo itself points guests to the broad central staircase and the polished corridors. The inn says each guest room differs in its Ranma transoms, Tokonoma alcove and shoji. The gallery to the left of the entrance lobby, by the inn's account, once held a gramophone and served as a dance hall.
Seeing the Kinparo Ryokan Main Building
The exterior of the Kinparo Ryokan Main Building can be seen freely from the street on its north side. Step back a little from the front gate and the full height of eaves and glass, up to the third floor, comes into view.
Only overnight guests and day bathers go inside. The inn runs tours of the building, and staying guests can ask for one. Guest rooms are on the second and third floors, none on the ground floor, and there is no lift. All rooms are non-smoking to protect the building. Ask the inn if photography is allowed indoors.
