The Gate and Wall on the Street
The Kinparo Ryokan Main Gate and Wall (旅館金波楼正門及び塀, Ryokan Kinparō Seimon oyobi Hei) is an early Showa-period timber gate and boundary wall at Hinagu Onsen in Hinagu Kaminishi-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2009 under registration number 43-0107, with gate and wall counted as a single entry.
It stands on the north side of Kinparo, facing the street. The gate is an Udekimon, a gate whose roof rests on bracket arms, 2.3 meters wide and flanked by short Sodobei wing walls. From the eastern wing wall a boundary wall runs 26 meters along the street. Gate and wall are both timber with tiled roofs.

The Kinparo Ryokan Main Gate and Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with creating the traditional streetscape of a hot-spring town.
Walking along the street, you meet the gate and wall before the three-storey Main Building. They hold the inn slightly back from the road and carry a low line of tiled roof along the frontage. With the tall Main Building behind and the low wall in front, the inn's face gains depth.
What to Look For: A Swelling Roof, Slatted Transom and Two-Part Wall
The gate of the Kinparo Ryokan Main Gate and Wall is a single-bay gate. Its gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles has a gentle mukuri, a slight upward swelling of the roof plane. Seen side-on, the roofline lifts softly instead of running straight.
The doors are a pair of board leaves, and above them sits an Osa-ranma, a transom of closely spaced thin vertical slats like the teeth of a weaving comb. A small wicket door, a Kugurido, is set into the western wing wall so that people can pass while the main doors stay shut.
The wall is finished in two layers. The lower part is Yamato-bari boarding, with boards lapped alternately front and back; the upper part is earthen wall pierced here and there with openings. Walk the 26 meters of it and follow the height where boards give way to clay, and the rhythm of the openings.

Because it faces the street, the Kinparo Ryokan Main Gate and Wall can be viewed freely from outside. Of the three registered structures, this is the one you can see in full without using the inn.
The gate and wall are the entrance and boundary of a working inn. Please do not open the wicket or the doors, or touch the wall. If you take photographs from the street, stand clear of the gateway so guests and cars can come and go.
