A Low Storehouse of 1820 behind the Well

The Document Storehouse of the Kinshi Masamune Horino Memorial Museum (former Horino Family Main Residence) (キンシ正宗堀野記念館(旧堀野家本宅)文庫蔵) is a storehouse for documents and valuables of 1820 in Kameyacho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 4, 2000 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 19 square metres; registration number 26-0076.

A Low Storehouse behind the Well

The document storehouse stands west of the main house, behind the well (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a low two-storey earthen-walled storehouse about 2 and a half bays square, running north to south under a gabled roof of round-and-flat tiles, with a pantiled canopy over its east-facing door.

According to Kyoto City, between the main house and the storehouse lies a courtyard with the Momo-no-i well, used for sake brewing since the company was founded, and a stone path leads from the crane-and-tortoise garden to the storehouse.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that a ridge tag under the upper ridge beam records the raising of the frame on the fourth day of the eighth month of 1820 and the name of the master carpenter, and registered it as something not easy to reproduce.

What to Look For

Follow the stone path from the crane-and-tortoise garden to the storehouse, past the sound of the Momo-no-i well (Kyoto City).
