An Old Sake Store with a Central Ridge Post
The Tenmei Storehouse of the Kinshi Masamune Horino Memorial Museum (former Horino Family Main Residence) (キンシ正宗堀野記念館(旧堀野家本宅)天明蔵) is a former sake storehouse of before 1864 in Kameyacho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 4, 2000 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 70 square metres; registration number 26-0075.
The Old Sake Store at the Back of the Site
The Tenmei Storehouse, once a sake store, stands at the back of the site north-west of the main house, along its western edge (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a fairly large two-storey earthen-walled storehouse, 5 and a half bays by 4, running north to south under a gabled roof of round-and-flat tiles and entered on its long side.
According to Kyoto City, the Kinshi Masamune brewery began here in 1781, when its founder opened a sake brewery on the site, and moved its brewing to Fushimi in 1880 in search of better water.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency notes the old-fashioned structure, with a central post running up to support the ridge, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to Look For
Look for the central post that carries the ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency record notes that the north end has been converted into a restaurant.
