The Rakurakuso Japanese-Style Building (楽々荘日本館) is a Japanese-style wing with rooms for the master and his wife of around 1898 in Kitamachi, Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 12, 1997 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 235 square metres; registration number 26-0004.
Rooms for the Master and His Wife
Rakurakuso was built around 1898 as the home of Tanaka Gentaro, who sat in both the House of Representatives and the House of Peers (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Japanese-style building is said to have served at first as the rooms of the master and his wife.
Though single-storey, it has a second skirt of roof running round it. The two rooms are given different interiors, and the alcoves and shelves of each, and the handling of their materials, show a high level of craft (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it as a structure that would not be easy to reproduce.
What to Look For
