The Wada Family Residence, Kyoto

The Wada Family Residence (和田家住宅) is a townhouse facing west onto Shinmachi-dori in Higashiwakamatsucho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto; its main house of the early Meiji era and storehouse of the late Edo period were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 7, 2008 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

A Kyoto Street Front and a Storehouse

Behind its front block, the main house has a small courtyard garden, an entrance, a kitchen and a reception room. On Shinmachi-dori it keeps a traditional Kyoto townhouse front, with a projecting lattice and an open lattice on the ground floor and fine lattices in the low upper storey (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

At the east back of the plot stands a two-storey storehouse with a tiled gabled roof. Ink writing on its window door, "Iseya Gihei, sixth month of the year of the rooster", shows the state of things before the Wada family acquired the property in 1892 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
