What the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex Is
The Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex is a small two-storey wooden building of the middle Meiji period in the Kawasaki district of Ise City, Mie Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 August 2001. Its building area is 15 square metres, and it stands at the back of the plot, north-east of the main house.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to about the same time as the main house and describes it as inward-facing architecture within a merchant household. If the main house on the street was the face of the business, the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex was the side customers never saw.
Why It Was Listed
The criterion is value as a model of design, and the roof is what carries it. The gable runs north to south under Sangawara-buki pantiles, and the line from ridge to eaves is not straight; it swells outward very slightly. This convex profile is called mukuri, and in the Kawasaki streetscape it stands alongside straight and concave roof lines as one of the recognised local types.
At 15 square metres this is among the smallest of the 12 listed buildings, ahead only of the cider inspection room and the filtration tower. That it was still built with two storeys says something about how tightly the rear of a merchant plot was used.
What to Look For
The swell of the roof reads better from a distance. Up close the eye follows the eaves and loses the curve, so take the southern side of the courtyard and look along the ridge line rather than at it. The bulge is slight. It is the kind of thing you see once you know to look for it.
Ise City records that the building now holds the Kawasaki Bunko, a store and reading room for old documents and books. The museum's own site plan attaches the word for annex to a different structure, and the correspondence table published by Ise City is what confirms that the listed annex is the document library. On site, go by position rather than by the name on the sign.
Visiting
The interior of the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex is a store and reading room and is not open to general visitors, so viewing is limited to the outside. It sits at the rear of the plot: walk north from the main house, step into the courtyard and turn round, and the whole of it is in view.
Since the ridge line is the thing to see, bright weather with clear shadows helps. Anyone wanting to consult the documents should ask at the museum reception, which is also where to check what may be photographed.

Q&A
- Where does the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex stand?
- At the back of the plot, north-east of the main house. It is the private, inward-facing part of the merchant compound rather than the commercial frontage.
- Can visitors go inside the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex?
- No. Ise City records that it now serves as the Kawasaki Bunko document store and reading room, so viewing is limited to the exterior.
- What is distinctive about the annex roof?
- It is a north to south gable in pantiles, and the slope swells very slightly outward rather than running straight. Look along the ridge line from the south side of the courtyard.
- How old is the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Annex?
- The Agency for Cultural Affairs assigns it to the middle Meiji period and considers it roughly contemporary with the main house.
- How large is the building?
- Fifteen square metres of building area over 2 wooden storeys, which puts it among the smaller of the 12 listed structures at the site.
