The Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Reception Room and Anteroom is a small Western-style structure of the Taisho period in the Kawasaki district of Ise City, Mie Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 20 November 2001. The building area is 9.0 square metres on a single wooden storey, which makes it among the smallest of the 12 listed buildings here.
It sits to the left as you come through the gate on the west side of the old Ogawa main house. The reception room is a single Western room roughly 2 Ken by one and a half, with a fireplace set into the west wall. The anteroom is the western half of the covered passage that links back to the earthen floor of the main house, and gate, passage and room together made up the firm's Western-style space for receiving guests.
Why It Was Listed
The criterion is value as a model of design, and what earned it is the assembly rather than the scale. Instead of putting up a free-standing Western pavilion, the household slid one Western room into an existing sequence: gate, anteroom, covered passage, earthen floor of the main house.
Listing came about three months after the ten buildings registered in August. Only the cider filtration facility shares its date of 20 November 2001. The registration number is 24-0038.
What to Look For
The fireplace in the west wall is the point of the room. The roof above is gabled, running north to south under Sangawara-buki pantiles, so a Japanese roof covers a Western interior. Seen from outside it is a tiled shed; stepped into, it is a parlour with a hearth. That gap is the interest of the Ise Kawasaki Merchant Museum Reception Room and Anteroom.
Nine square metres fills up with a table and chairs. That a sake wholesaler judged this enough for receiving visitors says something concrete about what Western-style hospitality actually meant in a provincial merchant house of the 1910s and 1920s. Ise City records that it now serves as a rest and exhibition space called the Shonin Club.
Visiting
Admission covers this building. Because the approach is from the west gate, the natural route is to check in at the main house reception and then work west around the courtyard. Since it doubles as a rest space, there is usually time to sit down and look at the fireplace properly.
The anteroom does not read as a separate room; it is part of the covered passage. From outside it is hard to tell where the listed extent begins, so walk the passage west from the earthen floor of the main house and watch for the change in floor and ceiling. Photography rules shift when an exhibition is installed, so check at reception.
