What the Former Yamada Main Store (Yamakano Brewery) Front Gate is
The Former Yamada Main Store (Yamakano Brewery) Front Gate, in Japanese 旧山田本店(ヤマカノ醸造)表門 (Kyū-Yamada Honten Omotemon), is an early Showa era (1926 to 1945) timber gate in Teraike Kokonokamachi, Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 4, 2021. It stands on the street just south of the Shop Storehouse.
It is a Munamon, a gate with a single ridged roof carried on two posts, here gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) and tiled, with an opening 2.3 m wide. Every visible part is zelkova (keyaki), and the doors include a small wicket for everyday use. The national database classes it as an "other structure" rather than a building.
Why the Front Gate was registered
The Former Yamada Main Store (Yamakano Brewery) Front Gate was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a modern Japanese-style design with carved ornament in the manner of temple and shrine architecture.
Carved gates are common at temples. On a merchant house, and put up this late, so much handwork stands out. Building it entirely of zelkova adds to the statement: this was how a family grown rich on brewing presented itself to the street, compressed into a 2.3-metre opening.
Reading the carvings on the Front Gate
The ornament on the Former Yamada Main Store (Yamakano Brewery) Front Gate changes with height, so it is easiest to read from the bottom up.
The transom panel
Above the door lintel sits a Ranma, a transom panel cut from a single board of zelkova. Getting a seamless board of that width meant a very large tree.
The brackets
Under the beams that carry the eaves are Mochiokuri brackets carved with swirling motifs. Look up above each post.
The gable board and pendant
At the gable ends, the verge board is carved with curling leaves, and the pendant under the ridge (Gegyo) is pierced with clouds and cranes. Because the carving is cut through, the cranes show most sharply against the light.
Visiting the Front Gate
The Former Yamada Main Store (Yamakano Brewery) Front Gate faces the street, so it can be seen from the public road. Beyond it lies Yamakano Brewery's working head office and factory, and no public access is advertised. See the whole gate from across the street, then step up to the front to look at the brackets and pendant, without passing through. Keep photography to the street, and contact the company in advance if you hope to see more (phone 0220-52-2511).
Seen together with the Shop Storehouse to the north, the calm horizontal shopfront and the densely carved gate make a telling pair.
