A Long Store with an Ordered Beam Frame

The Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewing Storehouse (Ebiki Hall) (海老喜旧醤油仕込蔵(海老喜ホール)) is a long storehouse showing the skill of master carpenter Sato Asakichi of 1892, altered in 1979 in Toyomamachi Teraike, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on May 10, 2018 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey plastered storehouse, partly two storeys, with a tiled roof and a building area of 110 square metres; registration number 04-0158.

An Orderly Frame of Beams

Ebiki is a merchant house of miso and soy-sauce brewers in the old castle town of Toyoma, with eight buildings on its site registered (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The former soy-sauce brewing store, built in 1892, is a long gabled storehouse at the back of the site facing east onto the street on the south, tiled and entered from the gable end.

Inside, a Japanese roof frame carries longitudinal beams and triple tie beams laid in order on its great beams, a highly developed structure (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes that it shows the skill of the master carpenter Sato Asakichi and the standard of timber building in the area in the modern era.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design.
