The Storehouse Beside the Shop
The Ebiki Front Storehouse (海老喜表蔵, Ebiki Omotegura) is a late Taishō-period (1919–1926) earthen storehouse beside the former shop on the Ebiki brewery premises in Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 May 2018. It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof and a building area of 71 square metres, altered between 1955 and 1964, registration number 04-152.
It faces east onto Mikkamachi Street and was used to hold stock for the shop and to store grain. Omote means front: this is the storehouse on the street side of the lot.
Part of the Street Front
The Ebiki Front Storehouse was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as shaping the historic streetscape of the old road together with the former shop.
From the street the two read as a pair: the two-storey shop on the corner, then the white walls of the storehouse continuing north. Built in the same years, they give Ebiki its public frontage.
Two Doors and a Double Beam
Inside, the Ebiki Front Storehouse is divided into two rooms on each floor. There are two doorways, one opening towards the former shop and one onto the street, so goods could pass straight through to the counter while deliveries came in from the road.
Walls inside and out are Ōkabe, with no timber showing, as befits a building meant to resist fire. The roof is carried on a double tier of beams.
From outside you can still pick out the street doorway and the point where the Ebiki Front Storehouse meets the shop. Keeping those two openings in mind makes it easier to picture how stock moved between store and counter.
Seeing the Ebiki Front Storehouse
The Ebiki Front Storehouse can be seen from Mikkamachi Street. Walk north from the corner of the former shop to see how shop and storehouse form one continuous frontage.
