The Newest of the Storehouses
The Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery (Ebiki Hall) (海老喜旧醤油仕込蔵（海老喜ホール）, Ebiki Kyū-shōyu Shikomigura) is an 1892 earthen storehouse along the southern street at the back of the Ebiki premises in Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 May 2018. It is a Dozo-zukuri building, single-storey with a partial upper floor, tiled, with a building area of 110 square metres, altered in 1979, registration number 04-158.
Built for brewing soy sauce, the Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery is the newest of the Ebiki storehouses. Known today as Ebiki Hall, it is used for group meals.
A Master Carpenter's Work
The Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property as a model of form. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it to the master carpenter Satō Asakichi and says it shows the standard of timber construction reached in the area in the modern era.
Miyagi Prefecture notes that Satō also served as master carpenter for the former Toyoma Higher Elementary School in the same town. A school and a brewery by the same hand still stand a short walk apart, and the Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery is where his skill can be read in the framing of a working building.
An Orderly Roof Frame
The Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery faces east onto the street, with a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles and its entrance in the gable end, the arrangement known as Tsumairi.
Its interest lies in the roof frame. It follows the traditional Wagoya system, but on top of heavy main beams it lays longitudinal beams running with the ridge and triple-tiered cross beams, all in strict order. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a highly developed structure.
Ebiki says people gasp when the doors open and they step inside. The long, regular run of beams to the far end of the building is the likely reason.
Visiting Ebiki Hall
The Ebiki Former Soy Sauce Brewery is used as Ebiki Hall for group meals, by advance booking only; Ebiki advertises a group plan that includes its miso ice cream served inside the storehouse. It is not open to individual walk-in visitors.
