What Ebiki Is

Ebiki (海老喜) is a miso and soy sauce brewer founded in 1833 in Teraike Mikkamachi, Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, and eight of the buildings on its premises were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 10 May 2018.

The eight are the former shop, the front storehouse, the main house, the miso and soy sauce brewing storehouse, the workshop, the archive storehouse, the former sake brewery now open as the Kura no Shiryokan museum, and the former soy sauce brewery known as Ebiki Hall. Their registration numbers run without a gap from 04-151 to 04-158, and their construction dates span the late Edo period to the mid-1920s. Shop, home, brewing stores and work space survive side by side, so the Ebiki site lets you follow a provincial merchant family adding buildings over almost a century.

The business is still run as Ebiki Shoten. According to its website it marked 180 years in 2013, and it continues to make and sell miso and soy sauce at the same address.

A note on names: the city is Tome, but the town written with the same characters, 登米, is read Toyoma. Ebiki stands in Toyoma-machi, the old castle town.

Why the Old Brewery Survived

Miyagi Prefecture describes Ebiki as a merchant house that began by brewing miso and soy sauce and for a time made sake as well. Tome City notes that sake sold under the name Kimigayo was brewed here until 1908.

Toyoma grew as the castle town of the Toyoma Date family and prospered on boat traffic along the Kitakami River. When transport shifted away from the river the town declined quickly, and Ebiki's own account is candid about the result: nobody needed to pull down disused storehouses to make way for car parks or new buildings. The old sake brewery stood almost untouched for about 80 years until it opened as a museum in 1992.

That lack of redevelopment is why a late Edo brewery and a 1920s shopfront still stand on the same lot. The Council for Cultural Affairs recommended registration of the eight Ebiki buildings on 9 March 2018, and the registration took effect with its official announcement on 10 May 2018.

How the Eight Buildings Are Laid Out

Ebiki occupies a corner lot just inside the town after you cross the Toyoma Bridge over the Kitakami River. As Miyagi Prefecture describes it, the former shop and the front storehouse stand in a row facing east onto the north-south road, with the house and a cluster of storehouses behind them to the west.

The former shop takes the corner itself, and the front storehouse adjoins it to the north. Behind the shop the main house runs east to west, and north of that stands the miso and soy sauce brewing storehouse, the oldest building on the Ebiki lot. The workshop fills the gap between that storehouse and the former sake brewery in the north-west corner, the archive storehouse faces east from the centre of the back of the lot, and the former soy sauce brewery stretches along the street on the southern side.

From the public road you can see the front of the former shop and the front storehouse, and the long flank of Ebiki Hall on the southern street. A sensible order is to start at the corner, take the guided visit of the Kura no Shiryokan, then walk round to the southern street to follow the wall of Ebiki Hall.

Visiting Ebiki: Hours, Fees and Access

The only Ebiki building that visitors can routinely enter is the former sake brewery, open as the Kura no Shiryokan (Storehouse Museum). Ebiki and Tome City give the hours as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission as 200 yen. The Miyagi Prefecture Tourism Federation lists closing days as irregular, a group rate of 160 yen for 20 or more, and about 30 minutes for a visit. Ebiki says every visitor, even someone arriving alone, is shown round with a spoken explanation, which is why there are deliberately no panels inside.

Ebiki Hall is used for pre-booked group meals only and is not open to walk-in visitors. We found no published arrangement for seeing inside the other six buildings, which belong to a working business, so view them from the street. By public transport, take the Higashi Nippon Kyuko highway bus on the Sendai to Toyoma route from stop 32 in front of Sendai Station and get off at Toyoma Meijimura. The ride takes about 1 hour 30 minutes; the timetable checked in September 2026 shows 3 departures a day from Sendai, and fares are cash only. Ebiki is about 200 metres south-east of the stop, a few minutes on foot. By car, Toyoma is about 4 minutes from Tome IC on the Sanriku Expressway.
