The Shop on the Corner
The Ebiki Former Shop (海老喜旧店舗, Ebiki Kyū-tenpo) is a late Taishō-period (1919–1926) shop building on the corner of the Ebiki brewery premises in Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 May 2018. It is a two-storey timber building with a slate roof and a building area of 80 square metres, altered in 1941, and carries registration number 04-151.
On the ground floor were the shop floor and the chōba, the counting desk where accounts were kept. Upstairs is a Zashiki, a tatami reception room for customers. Selling below and entertaining above: this was the public face of the business.
A Landmark at the Edge of Town
The Ebiki Former Shop was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. Cross the Toyoma Bridge over the Kitakami River and this corner shop is the first thing you see; the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a landmark at the entrance to the town.
The corner of the building is cut away at an angle so that it addresses both streets at once. That splayed corner dates from a Shōwa-era alteration, yet it repeats the wall decoration of the original upper storey, so the old and new parts read as one front.
Reading the Namako Walls
Look first at the upper storey of the Ebiki Former Shop. The walls are Ōkabe, plastered over the posts, and their lower part is Namako-kabe: flat tiles fixed to the wall with raised white plaster joints.
The usual pattern for these joints is shihan-bari, with the tiles set diagonally to form a lattice of diamonds. Here the craftsmen deliberately bent that pattern into a variant of their own. From across the road it looks like an ordinary lattice; closer in, the lines do not run where you expect.
Walk round to the cut corner and the same altered pattern carries on across the Shōwa wall. The later builders copied the Taishō design so faithfully that the join between the two periods is hard to spot.
At ground level the frontage is a run of sliding doors that could be opened to the street, a clear contrast with the closed, plastered floor above.
Seeing the Ebiki Former Shop
The exterior of the Ebiki Former Shop can be seen freely from the street on either side of the corner. The upper walls are easier to take in from the opposite pavement than from directly below.
