Ichijo Ryokan

Ichijo Ryokan (一條旅舘) is an inn for curative hot-spring stays at Kamasaki Onsen on the edge of Shiroishi, Miyagi; its early Meiji storehouse, the Yumukai Building of 1933 and the wooden main building of 1941 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Kamasaki Onsen, said to have opened in 1428, is an old spa, and the inn lies at the head of its long, narrow valley (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Corridor-Wrapped Wings and a Storehouse

Both the main building and the Yumukai Building have corridors round all four sides of each floor, with tatami rooms inside. The three-storey main building, rebuilt after heavy rain damage in 1937, has 10 rooms, long runs of railings and wooden fittings, fine cedar and many through-posts. The two-storey Yumukai Building has 8 rooms, and the Agency counts it a fine example of large early Showa timber building.

At the very back of the plot, on raised ground, stands the early Meiji storehouse, with clapboards below white plaster and a triple door of clay, boards and lattice (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.

Visiting

The three buildings are owned by Ichijo Ryokan Limited Partnership (Agency for Cultural Affairs). According to a release of June 16, 2025, the inn traces its start to about 500 years ago, when the first head of the Ichijo family, of Kyoto court descent, opened lodgings at Kamasaki, and a new resort, THE YUKAWA, was to open there in September 2025. No official information was found on the current use of the three registered buildings or on visiting them.
