Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Outdoor Lamp: electric light in a Japanese garden
The Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Outdoor Lamp (蔵の郷土館齋理屋敷外灯) in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture, is a stone garden lamp from the early Showa period (1926–1945), registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011.
It stands almost in the middle of the garden between the Shop Storehouse and the Sumai no Kura, 3.3 metres tall. Japanese gardens usually hold stone lanterns meant for candles or oil. This one carries a glass globe for an electric bulb.
Why it was registered
The base is a round column of Marumori granite. On top sits an iron central post crowned by a spherical glass shade, and around the post curl S-shaped iron supports that cradle the globe. Stone below, iron and glass above: the effect is closer to a Western street lamp than to anything traditional.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs says the lamp gives the garden a modern air, and pairs it with the nearby Stone Utility Pole as evidence of the district's modernization. For a family that had started an electric light company, putting an electric lamp in the centre of its garden was also a way of showing off the business.
What to look for
Get close to the lamp head and follow the S-curves of the iron supports as they wrap up under the globe. The line where the heavy granite drum ends and the ironwork begins is sharp and easy to read.
From the edge of the garden, the lamp shows up clearly against the white walls of the storehouses behind it. During the Sairi Gen'ya lantern evening in summer the compound is lit with lanterns, though we could not confirm whether this lamp itself is switched on.
Seeing the Outdoor Lamp
The lamp is in the garden of the Sairi Yashiki museum and is covered by admission. Walk out from the reception in the Shop Storehouse and it is straight ahead. The Stone Utility Pole stands just to its southeast.
