Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Front Gate: zelkova between two storehouses
The Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Front Gate (蔵の郷土館齋理屋敷表門) in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture, is a timber gate from the early Meiji period (1868–1882), registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011.
It stands on the street between the Shop Storehouse and the Yomego no Kura. The type is a yakuimon, a gate whose roof rests on beams carried by main posts in front and support posts behind, here with a gabled copper roof. Every member is zelkova (keyaki), a dense, handsome hardwood that merchants chose when they wanted to be noticed. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points out that a wooden gate set between two plastered storehouses breaks up the street front and gives it rhythm.
Why it was registered
The opening is 2.3 metres wide, closed by a pair of doors each cut from a single board. A zelkova trunk broad enough for that is not easy to find. Short side walls flank the gate, and a wicket door lets people pass without opening the main leaves.
The detail the Agency highlights is structural. Between the upper and lower roof beams (obari and mebari), the builders inserted bracket blocks, a kind of kumimono normally seen on temple and shrine buildings. On a merchant's gate it is a quiet statement of rank.
What to look for
From the street the gate sits lower than the storehouses on either side, and the warm brown of the zelkova stands out against white plaster. Get close to the doors and you can follow a single run of grain across each board.
Once inside the grounds, turn round. From the garden side you can look up at the rear support posts and the bracket blocks between the beams, which are hidden in the shadow of the roof when seen from the street.
Seeing the Front Gate
The street side is visible without a ticket. The inner face and the bracketing can only be seen from inside the compound, which requires admission to the Sairi Yashiki museum. Visitors normally enter through the reception in the Shop Storehouse; follow signs on site as to whether the gate itself is used as a passage.
