Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Yomego no Kura: the bride's storehouse
The Kura no Kyodokan Sairi Yashiki Yomego no Kura (蔵の郷土館齋理屋敷嫁の蔵, "the bride's storehouse") in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture, is a two-storey earthen storehouse built in 1904 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011.
The date needs a footnote. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives 1904, while the museum's own website says 1903; we could not find a source that settles it. The website also calls this the finest-built storehouse at Sairi Yashiki, which is a strong claim for one of the smaller buildings on the lot.
It stands just south of the Shop Storehouse and turns its east gable end to the street. Together with the Front Gate between them, the two storehouses make up the public face of the compound.
Why it was registered
The Yomego no Kura has a detached roof, or okiyane: a separate gabled roof set slightly above the plastered body of the storehouse. If the roof burns, the sealed core survives, and in summer the air gap keeps the interior cooler. The roof is copper, the entrance is in the gable end (tsumairi), and the building measures 7.2 metres by 4.5 metres, covering 32 square metres.
What makes it look bigger is height. The Agency singles out the tall ridge and the way this storehouse and the Shop Storehouse work together as one solid street front. Walls are white lime plaster, but the hachimaki (the thick band of plaster under the eaves) and the frames around the openings are finished in black plaster, and the base carries namako-kabe tiling. The black trim gives the small building a sharp outline.
What to look for
Stand across the street and look at the Shop Storehouse and the Yomego no Kura together. The shop presents its long side; the bride's storehouse shows a narrow gable that climbs higher. Neither roofline matches the other or the gate between them, and that unevenness is what keeps the street front from feeling flat.
On a clear morning, eastern light catches the black hachimaki against the white wall. A 2019 town report listed the exhibition themes as the hands and hearts of the household's women on the ground floor and preparations for marriage upstairs, which fits the name.
Seeing the Yomego no Kura
The east gable is visible from the street. The interior is part of the Sairi Yashiki museum route and is included in admission; enter through the reception in the Shop Storehouse and walk round from the garden side. Exhibits can change with special shows, so check what is on when you visit.
